A top trend for the summer is once again the kimono. For quite some time now, the kimono has been an outfit favourite and not only for those warmer months of the year. Now, with summer upon us, the light and airy kimono is a style essential be it morning or evening. However, some of us aren't quite sure how to wear the kimono and despite being tempted by the pretty prints and designs, we've thought twice about adding it to our summer closet. Most kimonos will pair nicely with clothes we already have such as skinny jeans, our favourite shorts or a cute mini dress depending on the occasion whether it be casual or dressy. So, let's take a look at how to make the versatile kimono work for you this summer.
Choosing the Right Kimono for You
As we've already mentioned, the kimono this summer has gone mainstream and, as such, there are a lot of styles to choose from. To begin with, the length is totally up to you depending on your personal style and perhaps your body shape. There are short kimonos which are about the length of a shirt. The midi kimono hits below the hips and the maxi kimono can be from mid-calf to full length. Try on all lengths to get a feel of which length is the best for you.
Once you've decided on the length, there are lots of styles to consider. Some have a tie at the waist which you can wear open or fastened. Some kimonos have fringes on the arms and hems and other decorative detailing. Some kimonos have wide sleeves or are ¾ length and aren't quite as loose. The kimono also comes in a variety of colours, prints and fabrics. Some have a Japanese influence whereas others fuse both an oriental and occidental vibe and some reflect a more boho feel.
See-through fabrics and net fabrics are mainly for beachwear. Long satin kimonos in black with gold detailing or vibrant colours are ideal for a night out. Prints abound such as animal prints, florals and abstract prints, to name but a few. Styles include boho and ethnic as well as the totally on-trend 70s style. So, basically, you're spoilt for choice so no excuses for not finding the ideal kimono for your look!
How to Make the Kimono Work for You
As we've said before, the kimono is ideal for any time of the day. So let's check out the which, whens and wheres.
Wear it as a dress (length allowing!) by tying at the waist either with the kimono tie or one of your own choice.
Wear over your swimsuit.
Wear in the evening over skinny jeans or leggings and a crop top.
Wear with shorts and a tank top tucked in.
Wear with a fitted mini dress.
When it comes to accessories, understated jewellery looks best with a kimono and if it's print, opt for boho style in shades that match the tones and colours of the motifs. A floppy hat is an ideal accessory for a classic boho look.
When it comes to shoes, it really depends on the time of day. Flat sandals in the morning or a chic mule. Platforms or strappy heels for the evening underneath a maxi kimono.
