Sustainability vs. Fast Fashion

We live in a fast world and we want things fast. We've all heard of fast food but, unfortunately, our need for things now doesn't stop there. Social media bombards us with images telling us how we should live our lives and this includes the way we should dress. The latest fashions are a ‘must' but are considered passé in just a few months. As a result, the fashion industry responds to this ‘need' and manufactures vast amounts of clothes in order to present new collections on a weekly basis - this is known as ‘fast-fashion'. However, have we ever stopped to consider how it is possible that so many clothes are produced in such a short space of time and what impact this is having on the environment?

Sustainability has been the buzz word over the last few years for those who respect the environment as well as human rights. In a world where our environment is being destroyed on a daily basis due to climate change, the actions of the fashion industry giants in their quest for cheaper and cheaper production costs while increasing volume as well as the chemicals used are adding to this destruction. Added to this is the exploitation of the garment workers employed to meet this need.  These workers are subject to dismal working conditions with very poor safety standards and regulations as well as being paid next to nothing while their employers rake in huge profits.

As such we need to really think about the clothes we choose to buy.

  1. Try to change the way you shop; before buying the latest ‘must-have' garment, think whether you truly need it. Always check the label to see what fabrics have been used with a mind to avoiding synthetic wherever possible.
  2. Don't dismiss second hand pieces and vintage clothes. Recycling can only be a positive choice for the environment and you'll be surprised at some of the treasures you will discover - and less costly too!
  3. Choose garments that have been manufactured from recycled material and that have been produced with the least possible environmental pollutants.  This may mean you have to choose smaller fashion brands that tell you something about their manufacturing process. The cost may be higher but eco-friendly sustainable fashion means buying fewer clothes anyway so it's win win!
  4. Before buying online even from an eco-friendly brand, check out the packaging and the delivery policy. Having been conscientious enough to buy a sustainable garment, it would be a shame to think it would arrive in swathes of plastic packaging!
  5. And last but not diminished in importance in any way - always shop with a cloth bag!!!

These days, more and more designers, artists and organizations through their art or creations are trying to get us to think differently so we will create our own timeless collection by buying only that we are truly in need of. Listen to them! Stop feeding the fast fashion frenzy and become an eco-warrior for ethical and sustainable fashion - starting today for a brighter tomorrow!
