Choosing the ideal swimsuit can be an issue for many women each summer. So, we've come up with a few guidelines to help you navigate this swimwear minefield. Find out which swimsuit's best for your body shape be it two-piece, one-piece, patterned or plain.
The Pear
If you are pear-shaped, the ideal bikini for you is one that will balance out your silhouette. Opt for a bikini that focuses on the top of your body thus distracting from the hips. You could go for neon, stripes, checks or print on the top and dark solid colour bottoms. The best design for pear-shaped girls is the triangle which ties at the nape or a bikini top that will give emphasis to the bust. Avoid bikini bottoms with ties at the sides and Brazilian bottoms and, instead, opt for bikini bottoms with wide sides.
If you want to wear a one-piece, the ideal swimsuit is one with a deep V neck and wide straps preferably with a bold print on the top half.
The Apple
If you're apple-shaped, your swimsuit should create the illusion of a slimmer waist.
The one piece with a belt or a different colour at the waist is the ideal choice for the apple-shaped silhouette. That way the waist will appear slimmer.
Another option is the tankini. Remember that a dark solid colour is always slimming.
If you want to wear a bikini, opt for hipster bottoms with ties and a triangle top.
Avoid a strapless top as this will only serve to emphasise your bust and belly!
Hourglass
The ideal swimsuit for the hourglass figure is one which will emphasise your assets. Choose whichever one-piece or two-piece you desire. A bikini in a classic cut or with a high waist would be a perfect choice as long as you have a flat tummy.
Boyish
If you have a boyish figure, the ideal swimsuit will give the illusion of curves and a slim waist. Opt for the monokini. The monokini is a one-piece with cutouts in the middle at the sides. The cutouts create the illusion of a curvy silhouette. Another choice to flatter this body shape would be a one-piece with high cut legs. Alternatively, if you prefer a two-piece, you can choose bikini bottoms with side cutouts. A high waist bikini is another way of creating the illusion of curves.
Don't be afraid to plump for bold prints and bright colours.
Sporty
The sporty figure needs a feminine swimsuit. The classic triangle top and string bottoms are an ideal choice for this body shape. This will lend a beguiling look and create the illusion of curves for your silhouette. Equally striking would be a print bikini with ruffles or fringes for a feminine feel. Another great choice for a super fit figure is cheeky bikini bottoms - if you've got it flaunt it! Pair these with a bandeau top.
Busty
For women with a big bust, when choosing a swimsuit, support is the most important feature. Choose a bikini top in the right size and preferably classic bra style with underwires. If you want a halter neck, opt for wide straps. Choose dark solid colour for the top and opt for bottoms in bright colours or even a print.
If the one-piece is more your style, just remember again that support is key. Opt for a swimsuit with underwires and a heart-shaped or straight neckline for a flattering finish.
Small Bust
For those with a small bust, the ideal swimsuit is one that will emphasise the bust. Choose a bikini top with ruffles, fringes or bright bold prints. Another option would be a push-up bikini top for a fuller bustline. A padded bandeau is another great way to add a little something extra.
Petite
For the petite silhouette, you want a swimsuit that will add height. A one piece with vertical stripes or a plunging neckline will lengthen your body. A high leg cut will lengthen your legs. If you want to wear a bikini, avoid swim shorts and opt for high waist bottoms that will add height.
Plus Size
Even if you've put on a few pounds there's no reason you won't find the perfect swimsuit. Ruffles throughout a one piece are very flattering. Opt for ruffles that are at an angle for a super slimming effect. Another option is swimsuits with front or side shirring which create the illusion of an hourglass figure. The Empire line will also flatter your figure. This design has a fitted top with a waistline below the bust opening out into a skirt of fine flowing fabric.
If your tummy is the issue, be on the lookout for swimwear that has a few tricks up its sleeve. Some brands offer one-pieces with built-in mesh paneling which will shape and smooth those tricky areas.
Just remember to try on as many swimsuits as you can so as to find the perfect one for your body shape. Styles are changing all the time and you may be surprised by what suits you. Always err on the side of smaller rather than bigger; swimsuits expand when wet and we wouldn't want any accidents!
Happy Swimming!!!
