The more we move into autumn, the more it becomes abundantly clear the importance of a cosy home. Just a few changes here and there can make all the difference and it doesn't have to cost a fortune either. So read on and find out how to heat up the atmosphere without necessarily having to switch on the heating!

  1. A throw is the ideal way to add autumn colours and warmth to your living room. Choose fall palettes such as burnt orange, golds and deep browns to adorn your sofas and armchairs. Opt for comfy cosy fabrics that can double up as snug blankets too while you're watching your favourite box set!
  2. Cushion covers are another ideal way of ramping up the autumnal air in your home. Again choose soft and luxurious fabrics in russet shades to add a feeling of welcoming warmth to your living spaces.
  3. Put up some pictures evoking autumn scenes. Or even make your own by box framing seasonal finds in nature such as dried leaves or pine cones. The result will be both rewarding and relaxing.
  4. For a more dramatic change, think about painting certain walls to create the feeling of a home makeover without the upheaval. By painting the wall behind your bed or the sofa you will lift your mood as well as elevating the look of the space that you'll be spending so much more time in at this time of the year. Opt for pumpkin shades or apple green to evoke autumnal crispness in your home.
  5. If you have a large mirror in your living room, decorate it with dried flowers either around the frame or in the corners of the mirror itself. If not, consider investing in one as it will enhance the light and space in your room which is something that's so often lacking during those autumn months.
  6. Another way to create the illusion of a lighter space at this time of the year is to move a sofa in front of a large window allowing the misty sun to become centre stage.
  7. Dig out big glass jars and vases and fill them with fall bits and bobs such as dried leaves, acorns, conkers and pinecones. Place them on mantelpieces, tabletops or any other available flat surfaces to create cosy autumnal vibes in your home.

Just follow these few simple tips on how to autumnise your home and the pleasure of curling up on the sofa with a good book and a cup of cocoa might even outweigh the lure of those dimming summer memories!
