We're in the deep mid-winter and, as such, we are experiencing low low temperatures. Now, contrary to popular belief, this does not mean that we can't still dress to impress. Cold temperatures do not equate to compromising on style. So, if you find keeping warm and looking great a tricky formula, then read on and follow our tips on how to achieve just that!
Layer Up
Layering is a super easy way to achieve warmth and maintain style. By wearing lots of layers, you create insulation thus keeping you toasty on those chilly days and nights. Wear a long top or shirt under your favourite jumper - make it a polo neck for extra warmth. Try wearing a crop leather jacket over a knit cardigan or wear a coat over a jacket and forget all about that pesky cold and look good too.
Cosy Coats
Of course one way to stay really cosy is a good winter coat. Faux fur and long puffer coats are two that spring to mind and just so happen to be really hot trends this winter too. Choose styles and colours that enhance your look and you can't go wrong whether it's glamour or style you're after. Have fun with them too - don't stick to dark colours - winter's gloomy enough without wearing drab shades as well. An all time classic look, of course, is a long woolen coat which will lend a chic touch to your winter style. If you want a more fitted look, cinch the wool coat at the waist with a belt and show off your silhouette.
If it's a sporty look you favour, puffer jackets or puffer vests are ideal - although with the latter, make sure you follow the layering rule for ultimate toastiness! Again the puffer in all its iterations is a hot trend this season so make the most of this snug style!
Accessorise
Accessories are another ideal way of keeping the cold at bay during those brisk winter months. Scarves, gloves and hats will lift your look and keep you warm too.
Wear an oversized scarf for the ultimate in style and warmth. Wear around your neck or drape over your shoulders shawl style.
A hat is another way to keep the cold out and the warmth in and will really lend an extra dimension to your look. Woolly hats are a popular choice and will add, with or without pompom, cute sporty style to any outfit. Also, a baseball hat with a cheeky ponytail is an easy option for a bad hair day and will never date either. However, for a statement look, the felt fedora is the perfect choice to really underline your individual style.
Right Tights
Okay so despite the cold, we still may want to wear our skirts and dresses and who says we can't? Certainly we're not going to let the cold weather dictate our dress code! So I know thermal undies can sound a bit ‘nan' wear but thermals have come a long way over the past few years. A pair of thermal tights is the ideal solution if you want to get your pins out! This stylish hosiery is often blended with cashmere or modal fabrics designed to keep you warm and stylish too. Wear with a sweater dress and combat boots for comfy cosy style.
Bossy Boots
The right choice of footwear is crucial during the cold weather. Boots with fur lining are an ideal choice. Combat or hiking boots are another way of ensuring your feet stay as snug as a bug! It goes without saying that thigh high boots are a cosy option for keeping your legs nice and warm. Always a delicate balance to keep this look on the side of chic so wear with a long coat to maintain an air of sophistication.
Knitwear
Pullovers, sweaters, jumpers …… whatever you may call them, are the quintessential warm winter wear. Naturally our favourite oversized sweater (yes, I'm nailing my colours to the mast!) is an absolute must this winter. Wear over long dresses and skirts and with your favourite sneakers. A belt at the waist will flatter your figure. Of course, there are endless other styles of sweater that you can choose from - polo neck, fitted, chunky and so on. The humble sweater will go with almost everything from pants to skirts keeping you cosy in the process.
Warm Fabrics
Opt for warm fabrics, whatever you are wearing. Wool of course is everyone's go-to during the winter months but velvet is another warm material that might not have been first on your list. What's more, velvet is a firm fashion favourite this season and this plush fabric will lend elegance to your look as well as keeping you as warm as can be. As we've mentioned before, thermals are also a good way of keeping warm without adding bulk to your look and will not compromise on style. These days you can find a huge variety of thermal leggings, tops and jackets in trendy designs.
So, armed with all these tips, enjoy those crisp brisk winter days in comfy cosy style!
