It's that time of year again and it throws us into a quandary every time. Of course I'm talking about that transitional period from the end of August into September when we're never quite sure what to wear. The beginning of autumn is neither hot nor cold and we find ourselves gazing into our stuffed-to-the-brim closets with the classic complaint ‘I've nothing to wear'! Relinquishing the summer is never easy psychologically anyway, but you cannot avoid the inevitable. So let's make life a little easier for ourselves by following some tips on how to style our look for the beginning of fall.
So what should we wear when it's too cold for summer clothes and too warm for winter clothes? What should we wear at the end of August and beyond? The weather will gradually start to change; it will be warm in the day and chilly at night. There will be days that will disprove this theory but, as a general rule, the transitional period follows this pattern.
You'll start wondering whether it's still ok to wear your sandals, whether shades are a bit much or whether it would be handy to have a cardy with you or if this bag is overly summery for this time of year.
Again ‘I've got nothing to wear' becomes your mantra. But is this really the case? Take another look inside your closet and you will discover that with a little imagination and the right combinations you can make your clothes work for you!
Keep it Short
You know that summer mini dress you love so much? Well don't think that just because summer is nearly over that it's time to put it away until next year. Wear with a blazer for an ideal summer-fall look. Depending on your style, sneakers or sling-backs are the perfect footwear for this cute ensemble. Don't forget to accessorise. Autumn style accessories such as supersized hoops or a designer logo barette clip will balance this transitional season's style.
Layered
Layering is the ideal solution for this tricky time. A silky strappy top over print pants and a cute cardy will keep you cool and collected. A neutral blazer for the evening is a must to keep off the chill. Again accessories will complete this look.
Chill Out
Fickle weather at this time of year can mean one day you're wearing your hot weather faves and the next you're digging out your winter woolies! This outfit is ideal for when the chill sets in. An animal print trench coat with a pair of 90s style jeans is a hot trend for the new season. Wear with sneakers but if the temperature plummets, pull on a pair of cowboy boots for the ultimate fashion statement.
Keep it Casual
For a girly casual look, opt for a short skirt and wear with your favourite white sneakers. Top with a jacket - we favour denim - and you're good to go! A multi-coloured rhinestone alice band will lend a fashion-forward dimension as well as cute colour to this look.
Night Out
If you're looking for something to wear for a night, out then this is when things start to get more tricky. One suggestion would be to wear your favourite figure flattering dress. A midi or maxi length is ideal for this time of year and opt for black or white to keep it chic. Pair this with an oversized blazer, wear atop strappy heels and step out in style. If you want a touch of bling to finish your look, the oversized pendant is a hot trend.
White Wash
White isn't just for summer, it looks great in autumn too. Total white is a great look for this time of year and it's uplifting too. Pair a basic white tee with a pair of white jeans, white sneakers and a light white gabardine for a fabulous finish.
Texturise
Another great idea is to contrast textures for a playful vibe. Try pairing your favourite summer midi skirt with a cosy knit top. Sneakers will lend a street style accent and keep it casual.
