As we've mentioned in earlier blogs, stress and anxiety are a sign of our times. As such we have to find ways of introducing as much tranquility into our lives as possible. And what is more important than our home? Our homes are our sanctuary and our refuge so we should try to furnish ourselves with an atmosphere of calm and serenity wherever and whenever we can. So let's have a look at how we can transform our homes into an oasis of tranquility.

Let There Be Light

Natural light has a very positive effect on our feeling of well-being and our mood. It also improves our circadian rhythm ensuring we feel alert in the day and suitably sleepy at night. We all know how important sleep is and how much a good night's sleep effects how positive and relaxed we feel the following day. Therefore, open your curtains and let in as much light as possible. Maximise the light by allowing light from the window to reflect against a mirror.

Plant Power

If you are lucky enough to have the luxury of a balcony or garden, looking after your plants is therapy in itself. In addition, with your curtains drawn back the act of just looking at your flowers and plants has been found to induce a feeling of calm. However, you don't need to restrict your plants to the outside. There's always room in your home for house plants be it in corners or on shelves and work tops. Apart from being aesthetically pleasing, house plants also have de-stressing properties. For the best results opt for aloe vera, English ivy, the peace lily, spider plants and philodendron and just enjoy the feeling of the stress melting away!

Calming Colours

One of the simplest ways of creating a tranquil space is colour. So really think about what you want to achieve when you paint your walls. Bright walls are energizing and stimulating so if it's peace and quiet you are pursuing, then paint your walls in soft, neutral shades. Opt for colours such as blue, green, pink, violet and yellow - always in soft hues for optimal results.

De-Clutter & De-Stress

Keeping your home neat and tidy and free of clutter is essential for creating a peaceful stress free environment. It doesn't take long to make the bed and to keep on top of the dishes. Also devote 5 to 10 minutes a day to de-clutter so that you always return to a clean calming home. The clearer your home, the clearer your mind.

Divide & Separate

Try if at all possible using your rooms the way in which they were intended. For example don't watch television in your bedroom or work in the kitchen. This, due to space issues, isn't always feasible but if it can be achieved then it will add to a feeling of balance and harmony

Fragrant

Our sense of smell is connected to our memory and is stored in our sub-conscious. According to some studies, negative emotions can be improved through our sense of smell. Aromas such as lavender, jasmine and rosemary can create a feeling of happiness and relaxation. Light scented candles or add drops of essential oil to pot pourri or burn essential oils diluted in water in an oil burner .

Follow these easy tips and turn your home into a huge all-encompassing hug. You'll reap the benefits as you feel the stress and tension dissipate.
