Do you have a small living room? Do you consider it a drawback? Well, if you find yourself nodding in the affirmative to both those questions, we've put together some living room décor ideas to make you change your mind. In fact, if you make a few changes by following some of our ideas, you'll totally fall in love with your living room instead of just putting up with the fact that your house isn't quite as perfect as you might have hoped.
1. White Wash
An emphasis on white will make a huge amount of difference and immediately your living room will look bigger and brighter. The first tip would be to paint the walls white. If you're not exactly champing at the bit to follow this piece of advice, you could always paint one wall in a contrasting colour that really floats your boat!
It isn't necessary to do out your whole living room strictly in white fabrics and furniture. You could combine white with other shades such as pastels or even bolder colours. However, it is best to avoid too many colour combinations; it would be wise to stick to combining two or, at the most, three colours so as not to look too busy.
2. Bare Minimal
Cut down the clutter and opt for a minimalist living room. Simplicity is the name of the game. An overloaded room is tiring and stressful whereas a room that has space for you to move through with ease, inspires a feeling of calm and tranquility
3. Don't Judge a Book ……
A bookcase isn't just for books! Investing in a good-sized fitted bookcase will solve a myriad of space issues in a Lilliputian living room. It's an ideal place to put books, magazines, pictures of loved ones as well as showing off a few of your favourite knick-knacks or ornaments that would otherwise have to be put elsewhere. This way you won't have to use up any more of your valuable space to store or display the aforementioned.
4. On the Shelf
If forking out for a bookcase is a step too far, you can always opt for shelves. Choose different sizes and shapes and you'll have the ideal place to store your favourite things without cluttering up tables and tops of furniture. Being short of space doesn't mean you can't have your bits and bobs on display; it just means making the most of your walls.
5. How Low Can You Go?
The classic couch with arms and a stylish coffee table are what every living room should have, right? Wrong, if space is in short supply. For a small living room, the ideal choice is low streamlined furniture. For example, a couch without arms will give the illusion of being roomy and comfortable. A low coffee table just in front will balance out this picture. If having a floor lamp is your heart's desire, there's no need to go without as long as it is slender and unimposing.
6. L-Shaped Sofa
One might think that small furniture is the ideal choice for a small room. However, this isn't strictly true. In fact, it is preferable to invest in a few larger pieces rather than lots of small ones. A large L-shaped sofa is a must for a small living room. As an L-shaped sofa can be placed in the corner of the room, it takes up much less space than a conventional couch and has the advantage of being spacious and comfy. Having larger pieces will, apart from preventing your living room from resembling a doll's house, allow you to move freely rather than tripping over small objects!
7. A Darker Shade of Pale
As we've mentioned before, it is not a good idea to paint a small living room in dark colours as it will make the room look smaller and darker. However, if your favourite colour happens to be a dark shade there are ways you can incorporate it into your living room. As a general rule, you could use a darker colour on smaller surfaces.
You can also use dark coloured cushions on your couch for striking contrast. In addition, you could opt for curtains in a dark shade. Just make sure you opt for solid colour rather than patterns to avoid busy-ness and lightweight fabrics so as not to overpower the room.
8. Keep it Light
We tend to lay thick heavy rugs, curtains and throws in the winter to create a warm cosy feel to our living room. However, all these things may overwhelm a small room and make it look even smaller. It would be better just to lay a warm soft rug in neutral tones for a warm feel. Opt for lighter fabrics both for throws as well as curtains so as not to overload the room but still create a feeling of warmth.
9. Mirror Mirror on the Wall …………..
Mirrors aren't just for admiring ourselves, they also have other merits. Mirrors can help add dimension to your living room and make it appear larger. One way of doing this would be to completely cover one wall in mirror and hey presto your room appears to have doubled in size. Simple!
10. Picture Perfect
If you still feel you want to add some décor to your room, paintings are always a good choice. Here you can really express your personality and taste. Go for a few large paintings rather than lots of little ones. You could also hang pictures of loved ones in matching minimalist frames. This will make your space look luxurious without appearing over the top.
